Joe Babat
Joe Babat was born and raised in Chicago’s own Wicker Park area and attended
Wicker Park grammar school and Crane Technical High School. Higher education
was begun at University of Illinois, Navy Pier in the Architectural program.
An enlistment in the Navy Sea Bees saw service in Cuba, Newfoundland and
Bermuda. After an honorable discharge from the Navy it was back to
University of Illinois at Urbana but, this time married and enrolled in the
Fine and Applied Arts program. After graduation he apprenticed with several
well established architectural firms in Wisconsin and Illinois. While
working in Wisconsin for Weiler and Strang, Architects he received his
Illinois license and began to exhibit his paintings. This was also a period
of intense painting and participating in various art shows. Moving back to
Chicago with family and a new position with the noted architectural firm of
Loebl, Schlossman, Bvennett and Dart lead eventual to the design and
building of a permanent home and studio in Lake Forest, Illinois.
Travels
During this time of employment there was time to travel and build a
background of experience with trips to Peru and the highland sacred site of
Lake Titcaca, City of Cuzco and its famous wall of Scsayhuaman. Arriving in
the colorful Bolivian capitol of La Paz several days were spent in absorbing
the local ambiance. A train trip from Cuzco to Machhu Picchu and its breath
taking train ride, brought to view the hill top site of Machu Picchu. A
latent fascination with Egypt and its hieroglyphic language lead to several
explorative visits to the land of the Pharaohs. Later under Frank Yurco at
the Field Museum, Chicago an extensive course was undertaken in the
deciphering of the glyphs. During this same period trips to Yucatan’s,
Chichen Itza and Palenque built a mental file as well as a pictorial file of
things to paint in the future. Further trip were made in the U.S. to the
Washington and West Virginia to round out a perspective of our own heritage.
Continuing travel will always expands experience and subject matter to paint
in the future.
Painting
Painting was always a hobby from school days on and he became a full time
professional artist in 2002. At that time enrollment at the College of Lake County in
a Water Color classes lead to a fine tuning of his art. After three years of
study and extensive painting at the home-studio a portfolio of new work was
put together. During 2006 work was exhibited in-studio and thoughts of going
public with the accumulated portfolio saw the establishment of a Web site (joebabat.com).

My services as an architect became effective on passing the Illinois state
exam in 1962. As a licensed architect my initial practice involved preparing
construction drawings for my employer. Establishing my own office in 1962
with the Skil manufacture as my first client, my private practice was
started. This was followed by many corporate clients before establishing
Niles Construction in 1972. At this point my firm was truly a full service
architectural firm. Projects included homes, manufacturing buildings and
multi-family units.
